Do you have to have a medical or healing background in order to attend the school?

No. Although we do have nurses, physicians, physical therapists, psychologists and others in various aspects of the medical community, our student body is also comprised of bankers, lawyers, homemakers, carpenters, athletes, beauticians and many other professions. Healing abilities are innate in all of us. We at IHAS will help you to awaken and develop these invaluable skills so that you may bring your healing gift to the world.

What are the admission requirements for this program?

You must be eighteen years of age and, for the EMP Program only, have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Most importantly, you must have the strong desire to step out of the self-limiting box you've placed yourself in and take the risk of growing emotionally and spiritually. In doing so, you will learn to see the world through different eyes, and come to understand that you and your gifts are limitless. This will enable you to stop surviving your journey and begin living it with passion!

What is Energy Medicine? What does it do?

First, let's look at how our body's energy works. Everything that exists, that we see, sense, or feel, is made up of energy. Our physical bodies are simply energy slowed down to a state that creates constant mass. The unique blend of energy is what creates our individuality. Energy is meant to be fluid, flowing and vibrant -- the way we feel when we are healthy.

When we are sick or have a disease, an energetic block has developed somewhere in the body. This block decreases the body's ability to function properly. In order to restore health, the energy may simply need to be balanced or released. Often times you know intuitively that you just don't feel right and yet your physician cannot find anything wrong. At this point, the disorder is still on an energetic level and has not yet become a physical problem. This is the opportune time for an energy medicine practitioner to work with the block.

The wonderful aspect of Energy Medicine is that it is effective as a complement to traditional medical care. It supports patients in minimizing effects from chemotherapy, promotes accelerated recovery from surgery, and expedites healing from wounds or fractured bones. With extensive training, an Energy Medicine Practitioner can help support the maintenance or restoration of health in an unlimited number of situations by balancing the body's energy flow. This enhances the immune system and overall health.

Can Energy Medicine do any harm?

As with any other form of medicine, energy medicine is best used when practiced by those with an extensive understanding of the power involved and the focus required to most effectively work with a particular patient. Energy medicine, when practiced by a well trained healer, is a tool of unconditional love directed solely to support a patient's health taking into consideration any specific needs or precautions that may be necessary for that particular patient. As taught by this school, energy medicine is an energetic, spiritual tool to assist clients in remembering their soul and its longings. The purpose of energy medicine is to balance the normal energy flows of the body that may have become stagnant, weakened or in flux due to stress in life. The practitioner is a catalyst for the patients, helping them to see what emotional and spiritual triggers have precipitated the dis-ease in the body whether it exists on the physical, emotional or spiritual levels.

Do you have to believe in God or be a religious person?

This program is not affiliated with any religion and there is no religious component to the curriculum. However, many different religions have been represented in the student body and teaching staff along with those who have no religious affiliation at all.

At IHAS, there is a solid emphasis on the spiritual aspect of our lives. We are human beings walking a spiritual journey. Our spirituality acknowledges the most intrinsic part of ourselves and illuminates our purpose for being alive. This work integrates healing on all levels of our existence: physical, emotional, energetic, and spiritual. Each level is emphasized in every facet of the work so that we can provide true wholistic support in healing.

How much hands-on work is required?

Within the EMP Program, the curriculum is designed with the morning sessions being primarily didactic or lecture filled. The afternoons have a minimum of two healing exchanges each day, under the guidance of the teacher and the two teacher's assistants in each class. Students continuously work with new partners within their class to support an expanded awareness of the variances in each body.

Is there group process?

Within the EMP Program, there is a solid understanding that we cannot take a patient where we have not gone. As a result, there is a significant emphasis on personal growth and self-understanding. The profound personal transformation of our students over the four years of training has shown the full value of this aspect of the curriculum. Each Saturday morning there is an in-depth look at one particular personality defense structure, as defined in Core Energetics. On Sunday mornings, a certified Core Energetics instructor leads the class through deeper experiential work in body-centered psychotherapy. This allows for complete understanding of each personality defense. Small group discussions take place every afternoon to further the students' comprehension of the process work. Psychotherapy is highly recommended and encouraged throughout the four years to support the intense personal growth that takes place at the school.

How much homework is there?

Within the EMP Program. homework greatly assists the students in integrating and applying the skills and theories learned during the weekend. Between classes, students read an assigned book and submit a one-page write-up, reflecting upon the book's significance or impact to their lives. Students are required to practice the new healing method they learn every weekend of the four years. They must complete a minimum of three healings between classes using the new technique, and write a one-page report on each session. Students will maintain a journal of their personal growth and development throughout their four years.

What can I do with my IHAS education and training after graduation?

For those in the EMP Program, many students use their training to open a private practice in energy medicine. Some go on to work in the professional offices of chiropractors, naturopaths, or other complementary/ alternative or allopathic medical practitioners. Others incorporate this work into their present career as nurses, massage therapists, psychologists, etc. Many of our students come to IHAS specifically to discover how to live their lives as vibrant, powerful human beings and may choose not to do hands-on work in a formalized program after graduation.

Can I do an internship near my home?

For the EMP Program, internship programs have been established at a number of Connecticut hospitals, locations in NY, NJ, Pennsylvania and a nursing home in Providence, Rhode Island. With students now enrolling from all across the U.S., it is anticipated that other internship sites will be established for those living outside of the Southern New England area.

Why do IHAS students go to Anguilla?

Beautiful Anguilla, Dottie's home of eight years, is a land unlike any other. Because it is significantly different, geologically and energetically, from the United States, and most dramatically distinct from New England, many of the students begin their life transformation the moment they step off the plane. In Anguilla, you will spend a solid seven days where there are no distractions from home or business, no illusions or wearing of masks that keep you from getting to know, experience, and love your true self. For those who have participated in this exhilarating weeklong intensive, there have been profound experiences of self-awareness, expansive development of intimacy skills, and an enriched understanding of living a life without limits. What you learn in the classroom portion of the workshop will continue to unfold during your free time on the island as you swim, snorkel, explore or simply read and relax on pristine, secluded beaches. Ultimately, this week prepares you for the next two years of loving service in your internship; it deepens the commitment of community created with your classmates, and opens your heart to the unlimited choices that help you decide how you want to experience the rest of your life. It is a gift you give yourself -- one that you so completely deserve.
